Afternoon Edition: Peace Poster Contest Winner (and More...)

STOUGHTON LIONS CLUB 2011 PEACE POSTER CONTEST WINNER: 7th grader Julia Foye was recently honored by the Lions Club for her colorful poster on this year’s theme, “A Vision of Peace." Congratulating Julia is Effie Noren, a former Stoughton Lions Club President and long-time member, contest judge and a graphic artist.

Posters on the theme by other students at Stoughton’s were also submitted. Attending the award program were Julia and her parents Linda and Richard, an Iraq War veteran. Each year, Lions International sponsors the Peace Poster Contest designed to encourage young people worldwide to artistically express their visions of peace.

In the last 20 years, more than four million children from 100 countries have participated in the contest. Effie Noren said, “The works created are unique and express the young artists' life experiences and culture. The judges this year saw some amazing talent.”

For students age 11 -13 interested in entering next year’s contest: The international grand prize winner attends a special award ceremony at the United Nations and receives an engraved plaque and substantial cash prize.  The Stoughton Lions Club sponsors a summer concert series, collects old eyeglasses and participates in other community activities. NO SPEECH FOR YOU: Free Speech Warrior and Internet Sensation Ann Barnhardt is NOT speeking at .  It had been annouced she'd be there next Sunday. Rabbi Jonathan Hausman tells About Town, "Due to circumstances beyond our control, the speaker this Sunday has been canceled."  

DECA EVENT WEDNESDAY: DECA Adviser Eddie Rodrigues invites all students, faculty, administration and parents for a presentation about their recent . It happens at the media center Wednesday May 11th at 6:30 p.m.

The students will share their experiences with everyone who was so helpful during their International Career Development Conference in Orlando. 

Rodrigues adds, "I know it may seem that the students are out of school lots of days during the year but, I would like to showcase what the trip was like and what is gained by this wonderful program known as DECA. Each student will present what they did and what they learned during this conference. There will also be a slide show of pictures from the trip.  I hope to get a large crowd for this meeting to showcase this program and what it can do for the students of Stoughton High School. Thanks and I hope to see you there."
