A Stoughton man was arrested Sunday night after allegedly traveling double the speed limit and assaulting a police officer.

During a motor vehicle stop on Washington Street, Thomas Powers, 53, of Stoughton, was arrested and charged with operating a motor vehicle negligently to endanger, speeding, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, failure to drive right for approaching emergency motor vehicle, assault and battery on a police officer, and malicious damage under $250 according to the Stoughton Police Log.

According to a police report obtained by the Enterprise, Stoughton police officer Jonathan Gagne attempted to pull over Powers after his Dodge Dakota passed the officer at about 60 mph. The vehicle drove to the left side of the road before returning to the right and stopping on the side of the street.

While Gange was preparing the citation, Powers left his vehicle with his fists clenched and said, “I’ll show you.” When it appeared that Powers may have been reaching for something in his truck, he was placed in handcuffs by Gagne. After being placed in handcuffs, Powers allegedly began to move his torso back and forth, grabbing the officer’s groin area.

Powers was reportedly uncooperative during the booking process. He was arraigned Monday at Stoughton District Court. He pleaded not guilty and was held on $750 bail.
