Woman Pistol-Whipped In Attempted Carjacking: Stoughton Police

A good Samaritan chased after a suspect that struck a woman with his gun and tried to steal her car, according to Stoughton police.

STOUGHTON, MA — A woman was struck with a handgun during an attempted carjacking on Sumner Street, according to police. Just before 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, police said the suspect attacked the woman and stole her car.

The woman then got the attention of someone driving in the opposite direction, and that good Samiritan stopped to help.

At approximately 7:35 this morning the Stoughton Police Department responded to a carjacking on Sumner Street. The victim was struck with what she described as a hand gun while sitting inside her vehicle. The victim was able to get the attention of a vehicle driving in the opposite direction. A Good Samaritan stopped to assist.

Police said the suspect ditched the victim's car on Bancroft Street and ran away before being picked up by someone driving a Hyundai Elantra. The two suspects drove off onto Sumner Street and then turned onto Birch Street, but the good Samaritan that had stopped chased after the Elantra until the suspects accelerated toward Brockton on Park Street, police said.

Stoughton police sent the Elantra's license plate out to other police departments around the state. Police said the car came up on several plate readers in the greater Stoughton area and was found by Randolph police between noon and 1 p.m. Wednesday at an apartment complex at Chestnut West.

Cruisers flooded the area and stopped the vehicle. Two people were taken in for questioning, but were later released. Police said there are know charges at this time.

"This investigation is still fluid and developing," Stoughton police Lt. John Bonney said in a statement. "We will update you when we have more. There are no charges at this time. We would like to thank all of the agencies that assisted us in the recovery of this vehicle."
