SUDBURY, MA — Sudbury has received a $10,000 risk management grant from the Massachusetts Interlocal Insurance Association to help purchase new safety equipment and protective gear for the Department of Public Works, the nonprofit organization announced on Thursday.
The funding allowed the town to upgrade and replace essential personal protective equipment and safety gear used in roadway work, equipment operation and emergency response, according to town officials.
MIIA is a membership service of the Massachusetts Municipal Association. The nonprofit organization provides municipalities and other governmental entities with insurance coverage alternatives, risk management and wellness programs.
New equipment purchased through the grant included face shields for tree care, protective chaps, ladders, pop-up tents, work zone signs and traffic cones. Officials said the upgrades will help better equip DPW staff to perform their duties safely and efficiently, reduce workplace injuries and improve compliance with safety standards.
“The Risk Management Grant provided the Department of Public Works with additional resources that not only enhanced our staff’s ability to perform their work safely and efficiently, but also strengthened our capacity to support the Police and Fire Departments during emergency events,” Sudbury Director of Public Works Tina Rivard said in a statement.
Town Manager Andy Sheehan said maintaining safe working conditions for employees remains a priority.
“It is extremely important to ensure safe working conditions for our employees,” Sheehan said. “The MIIA Risk Management Grant helps us to do just that.”
Now in its 24th year, MIIA’s fiscal year 2026 risk management grant program awarded a total of $1 million to 146 members to support risk management practices and projects aimed at protecting employees, buildings, infrastructure and other public assets.
“This grant program is about helping members take practical steps to reduce risk and strengthen resilience,” said Stan Corcoran, senior executive and MIIA executive vice president. “Our focus this year was to empower members to effectively address the growing challenges of evolving weather patterns, employee health and safety, and emerging cybersecurity threats. We are pleased to support Sudbury’s efforts to improve DPW safety, reduce workplace risk, and help ensure reliable public services.”
