SUDBURY, MA — Improvements are coming to Smile Playground and the restroom facilities at Haskell Field, with construction expected later this summer.
The work is being funded through two Community Preservation Act projects for fiscal 2027 that were approved at Sudbury’s 2026 Annual Town Meeting, according to the town. The projects aim to improve accessibility, safety, usability and the overall experience for residents and visitors.
Construction and repair work is expected to begin in late July or early August and last about three to four weeks, according to the town. The playground and restrooms will be closed during construction.
The town said the two projects are scheduled to happen at the same time to reduce disruption to the public. The schedule is also designed to limit impacts during peak summer use, sports seasons and Sudbury Summer Camp operations.
At Dr. Bill Adelson Smile Playground, planned improvements include new playground equipment such as a merry-go-round, a saddle spinner and a rocker seat. The project also includes new sensory and interactive play features, including farmers market panels, a sensory dome and tunnel and Vibra Chimes.
The playground will also get a new poured-in-place ground surface intended to improve accessibility and safety, according to the town. The new equipment and features will be ADA universal and suitable for all ages.
At the Haskell Field public restrooms, the town plans a full interior renovation down to the studs, along with new commercial-grade plumbing fixtures, epoxy flooring and a new ventilation fan.
The work will also include accessibility and safety improvements, enhanced durability and cleanliness and changes meant to allow the restrooms to open earlier in the spring and stay open later into the fall.
The final timeline may change based on equipment delivery, contractor scheduling and unforeseen circumstances, according to the town.
