Traditional Martial Arts Tournament

The New England Schools of Oom Yung Doe will be holding a Traditional Martial Arts (TMA) tournament at the Curtis Middle School on Saturday October 20 from 12:30pm – 3:30pm.  The tournament is open to the public, general admission is $5 and children 12 and under are free.  There will a demonstration at 2:45pm by the New England Demonstration Team as well as adult and children students.  Various higher forms, sparring techniques and weapon movements from the 8 martial arts taught will be demonstrated.

The common understanding of Traditional Martial Arts (TMA) in Asia is that it incorporates morals, etiquette, and meaning along with mental, physical and spiritual development – but in the U.S. the common focus is on a visible target. The focus of TMA tournaments is on winning over yourself, whereas the focus of most martial arts or sports is winning over others.   You compete against an international standard of skill and ability not your fellow competitors. The goal is to reach your fullest potential for your ultimate mental, physical, and spiritual development; that is success. This success directly improves every aspect of your life.

This tournament will focus on Hyung forms. Each Hyung is a series of movements derived from elements of nature (e.g. moving your body the way the ocean surf moves, or moving your body like a tiger).  Each tournament participant learned a Hyung form directly from a Traditional Martial Arts Master. Learning from a qualified Master, ensures that the movements fit with a student’s natural movement style no matter their age or body type.
