Are Winter Baths Good or Bad for a Dog’s Health?

Pet care expert shares advice on keeping the family dog healthy and comfortable with wintertime grooming

Many pet owners wonder if baths are necessary during the long, cold winter months – especially since dogs aren’t spending much time outdoors.

According to pet care expert Traci Simo of Canine Company, skipping winter bathing is a mistake. “Our dogs’ skin becomes dry and itchy, just like ours does, when our heating system is constantly running constantly,” says Simo. “If your dog is scratching, licking or biting herself during the winter months, she’s uncomfortable. Working at those irritated areas can open wounds and lead to more serious skin issues.”

To prevent problems and make your pet more comfortable, Simo recommends the following:

  • Brush often – daily is best -- to stimulate the skin’s natural oils, which will keep the pet more comfortable. “Use the right brush for your dog’s coat to get the most benefit. A professional groomer can advise you on which to choose.”
  • Give the dog a massaging shampoo followed by a deep moisturizing treatment. “Use only products specifically formulated for pets. Dogs’ skin has a different pH, so using human products can actually make skin problems worse,” she says.
  • Dry with care. Towel thoroughly, and comb or brush the hair to facilitate the drying process. “Be sure your hair dryer is on the coolest, lowest setting so you don’t burn your dog’s skin.”

How often should you bathe? Pets with dry, itchy skin may need a shampoo and moisturizing treatment monthly, notes Simo, which can be messy. “That’s why many pet parents prefer to turn that task over to a professional groomer, like our Canine Company’s Mobile Spa , which offers at-home grooming appointments throughout Middlesex and Norfolk counties.”
