Chris Evans Responds to AG's Enforcement of 'Assault' Weapons Sale

'Captain America' took to Twitter to support Maura Healey's crackdown on copycat assault weapons in the state.

SUDBURY, MA—Chris Evans, Sudbury native, Captain America and active Tweeter, recently showed his support for Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey's recent maneuver toward cracking down on the sale copycat assault weapons in the state.

An enforcement notice went out to 350 manufacturers and sellers in Massachusetts in mid-July, notifying them the AG's office is cracking down on the sale of certain modified guns, which will now be treated as "copies and duplicates" of assault weapons as defined (and long banned) under state law.

Evans commented that while he's not ant-gun, "certain weapons should only be in certain hands."

Healey Tweeted back, thanking Evans for his support.

The enforcement notice clarifies what constitutes a “copy” or “duplicate” weapon under the assault weapons ban, said the announcement from the AG's office. Copies or duplicates of banned assault rifles, including copies of the Colt AR-15 and the Kalishnikov AK-47, are prohibited by the Massachusetts assault weapons ban. Despite the law, an estimated 10,000 copycat assault weapons were sold in Massachusetts last year alone.

“The gun industry has openly defied our laws here in Massachusetts for nearly two decades,” said AG Healey in a statement on July 20. “That ends today. We have a moral and legal responsibility to ensure that combat-style weapons are off our streets and out of the hands of those who would use them to kill innocent people. Increasingly, these guns are the weapon of choice for mass shooters, and we will do everything we can to prevent the kinds of tragedies here that have occurred in places like Orlando, San Bernardino, Newtown and Aurora.”
