SUDBURY, MA — The Goodnow Library is hosting an artistic memorial for a local man killed by a driver in Acton last week who helped build the town's first art repository.

Kevin Shaw, 44, was hit by a 17-year-old in a Subaru station wagon near Brook Street and the Donelan's Supermarket plaza on Oct. 13. The Middlesex DA's office said Shaw was a pedestrian.

Shaw was married to Bethany Schlegel Shaw, a local illustrator who originally proposed the idea of setting up a Free Little Art Gallery (FLAG) box. Similar to little free libraries, anyone can take a piece of art from the FLAG or leave one behind.

Kevin Shaw helped install the FLAG box and added lighting for it.

To remember Shaw's contribution, the Goodnow Library is asking residents to fill the gallery with handmade hearts.

"He and his wife Bethany were instrumental in bringing the FLAG to Sudbury. We invite you to fill the gallery and join us in honoring the spirit of community, love, and creativity," the library said in a message to patrons this week.

If you want to donate a heart, drop it off at the FLAG located outside the Goodnow, 21 Concord Road. You can also mail hearts to the Sara Sherman NOW Lab at the Goodnow Library at that same address.
