Goodnow Helps Parents Teach Kids Math

Foundation sponsors talk on "questioning" to boost skills

How can parents use ”questioning” to develop their children’s mathematical minds?

Lainie Schuster, a math teacher and author, has the answers. She’ll be sharing insights for parents and teachers on Tuesday, April 28, in a program on ”Opening Your Child’s Mathematical Mind.”

The talk begins at 7:30 pm in the Goodnow Library’s first floor meeting room. It is the last offering in the Goodnow Library Foundation’s 2015 ”Programs for Parents” series.

Schuster asserts that as parents work to support the teaching and learning of mathematics, they need to pay close attention to the questions they ask their children. Parents want children not only to understand what they think, but also to be able to articulate how they arrived at that understanding.

Schuster is the author of several books about math teaching, including ”Good Questions for Math Teaching, Grades 5-8: Why Ask Them and What to Ask,” published by Math Solutions. She is also Lower School Head at Fay School in Southborough.

As a teacher who writes for other teachers, she is uniquely qualified to answer parents’ questions about the best way to inspire a love--or at least a liking--of mathematics.

The talk is free and open to the public. A question and answer session will follow the talk, and refreshments will be served.

The Goodnow Library is located at 21 Concord Rd., Sudbury.
