LETTER: Silvia Nerssessian Announces Run For Sudbury School Committee

Nerssessian is officially announcing her candidacy.

SUDBURY, MA — It is with great enthusiasm that I announce my candidacy for Sudbury School Committee.
My husband Shawn and I have two children. Our son, Anthony, attends Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School, and our daughter, Adrianna, will enter Peter Noyes Elementary in the fall. We moved to Sudbury for its historic charm as well as its commitment to its schools, which value academic excellence and social-emotional learning. Since moving to Sudbury last year, I have attended School Committee and Finance Committee meetings, and met with constituents to educate myself on important issues in our community.
My background is in finance. I have eight years of experience serving on a school board at Atrium School in Watertown, MA. I served on the Board’s Finance Committee for one year, as Board Treasurer for four years, and as Board Chair for three years. When I began my tenure on the board, the school was in dire financial straits. I committed myself and the school to establishing a path to financial sustainability by creating policies and procedures to achieve stability while still enabling growth.
Under my leadership, our board committees and administration collaborated using forward-thinking fiscal management to achieve long-term goals. With a clear vision, we made difficult but necessary decisions. We operated with a balanced budget while reserving funds for future needs, program expansion, and facility renovation. We added a middle school, established a long-term strategic plan, and purchased a building to secure the school a permanent home. As a result of our vision and planning, today Atrium enjoys a stable and sustainable financial future.
Positive, open, and responsive leadership will help Sudbury address the challenges and opportunities it faces today. Strong oversight will ensure quality of learning, safeguard human and financial resources through proactive analysis of the budget and financials, implement long-term planning, and ensure transparency. School committees are often faced with difficult choices to achieve financial goals, but I will ensure that our core values guide our decisions. I am committed to enhanced collaboration within the School Committee and across all cost centers for the betterment of our town.
It would be an honor and privilege to serve the students, parents, teachers, administration, and taxpayers as a member of the Sudbury School Committee.
