Sudbury Playground Repairs Delayed, Partial Reopening Planned
Repairs at Sudbury's popular SMILE Playground at Haskell Field are taking longer than originally expected.

SUDBURY, MA — Repairs at Sudbury’s popular SMILE Playground at Haskell Field are taking longer than originally expected due to a contractor delay, town officials announced this week.
The inclusive playground, which closed earlier this month for surface repairs, is now expected to have work completed by May 15. Officials said the playground will partially reopen from Friday, May 8, through Monday, May 11, before closing again on Tuesday, May 12, to allow crews to finish the remaining repairs.
During the temporary reopening, the section of the playground located on the right-hand side as visitors enter will be roped off and unavailable for use. The remainder of the playground will stay open to families and children.

The SMILE Playground, which is short for Sudbury’s Mission for Inclusive Leisure Experiences, is one of the town’s most popular recreation destinations and was specifically designed to serve children of all abilities. Because of its specialized safety surface and accessibility features, the playground requires periodic maintenance to remain safe and compliant with accessibility standards.
Town officials first announced the closure in April, saying crews needed time to repair the playground surface as part of ongoing maintenance efforts.

“We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your understanding as we repair the playground surface,” the town previously said in a notice.
The project was originally expected to be completed during the week of May 4, though officials noted at the time that weather and construction conditions could impact the timeline.
Residents looking for alternative outdoor recreation options during the closure are encouraged to visit other parks and playgrounds in Sudbury until the SMILE Playground fully reopens later this month.
