Recent mosquito surveillance traps in Sudbury found fairly high mosquito counts. Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) has not been identified in the state so far. Although mosquito numbers are high, the main species that spread EEE throughout the bird population, Cs. melanura, have had very low populations. This species has a second hatch which will occur over the next couple of weeks. The collection of samples in the coming weeks will start telling us how the populations are shifting.

The rain is most likely going to cause a large jump in total mosquito populations. Floodwater species have already started coming out of wetlands because of the rain. We should see a large increase in floodwater populations over the next two weeks. Sudbury risk level for EEE has been low but residents are asked to continue to monitor risk level maps for EEE and West Nile Virus at:
