Today's riddle: What do you call a belt that is made of watches? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. North Shore DAV Officer Honored With Gomes Service Award (patch.com) — Swampscott readers are introduced to Brigadier General Andrea Gayle-Bennett, who was just honored with the 2026 Peter J. Gomes Service Award for her work with the Lynn-Swampscott Disabled American Veterans Chapter #64. Her efforts connecting local veterans with housing, food, and peer support networks are spotlighted as a model of community service across the 6th District.
2. Swampscott Sets Hearing On Communter Rail District, Zoning Changes (patch.com) — Swampscott residents will soon have a chance to shape future development around the commuter rail, with a Planning Board hearing on Oct. 6 at 7 p.m. at Swampscott High School. The meeting will cover proposed 40R Smart Growth District standards, building height and density, mixed-use housing, parking, and other zoning updates that could significantly influence neighborhood character and local businesses.
3. Swampscott High School Earns School of Recognition Honor After Major Gains (swampscotttides.org) — Swampscott High School has been named a School of Recognition by the state after jumping from zero to a perfect 12 points on DESE's performance scale in just one year. Principal Emily Zotto credits more targeted support, stronger student-teacher connections, and revamped X-block schedules, which give underclassmen more core-class time and upperclassmen structured independence, for improved MCAS results and school culture.
4. Cross Country Teams Race Toward Championship Meets (swampscotttides.org) — Swampscott High's cross country teams just hosted Masconomet on the home course, with the girls staying undefeated at 4-0 while the boys moved to 2-2. Coach WF Newhall says the squads are hitting their first big performance jump and using detailed knowledge of Swampscott's gulley, wilderness, and Goat's Hill to gear up for conference and state championship meets.
5. Save the Glover records $16,000 in new donations (marbleheadweeklynews.com) — A preservation campaign to save Swampscott's historic General John Glover Farmhouse on Salem Street just received $16,000 in new donations, including a major $10,000 gift from a Salem group. Organizers say the funds will support stabilization and planning work as they seek broader public backing to protect the 250-year-old Revolutionary-era landmark from demolition and secure its future for community education.
