Cub Scouts Brave the Wind and Wet

Despite bad weather, Cub Scouts attend first camp of the year at Camp Nihan

Despite the dire weather forecast for last weekend, the ability to drive a few minutes to be back home in a warm dry bed helped Cub Scouts from Swampscott’s Pack 55 decide to come anyway to our first overnight camp of the year at Camp Nihan. Wonderfully, of 23 boys who signed up, 18 braved the weather and came with their parents to be treated to a ranger-led hike and talk, entertained by a talk and demo on fishing for the fishing belt loop, then hiking and leave no trace for the Hiking belt loop. After that that they dined like kings, had the usual smores and campfire stories, slept like logs, had Dutch oven bacon and eggs for breakfast, and caught fish, leaving for home minutes before the snow dumped on us.

Yes, it was continuously wet, but thankfully the wind gusts did not materialize per the weather forecast.

Thanks to all the parents who helped out with meal assembly, cleanup and chasing after kids additional to your own. For those who came for dinner but did not stay the night – let’s hope for better weather next time!

The Cub Scouts program helps each of our sons to grow, learn new skills, effectively pursue individual endeavors as well as build leadership traits and engender a cohesive spirit of camaraderie and teamwork. Each activity in which the Cub Scout participates leaves him with greater confidence in himself and provides talents which complement his academic and extracurricular life. And every single activity is built around the central tenet that it must be enjoyable.

Adult leaders in Pack 55 undergo a CORI check and complete specialized training. Parents are always welcome to actively participate in Pack activities. Pack 55 welcomes boys from all backgrounds who wish to be included.
