How Many Fire Hydrants Are There in Swampscott?

Here's a hint: Lots. And the fire department needs help clearing them of snow.

Did you know there are more than 400 fire hydrants in Swampscott? That’s a lot of hydrants for one fire department to shovel out.

That means the town’s fire department needs residents’ help clearing those hydrants.

“With over 400 hydrants in town three days later we are still shoveling out hydrants,” reads a message posted Thursday evening on the Swampscott Fire Fighters Union Local 1459’s Facebook page.

The post goes on to point out that private contractors plowing residents’ driveways are guilty of putting “huge mounds” on the hydrants.

“Help us help you,” the post reads. ”If its [sic] YOUR house on fire wouldn’t you want us to quickly get water on the fire instead of digging out hydrants first, then getting water[?]”

The post asks that residents clear a three-foot berth around hydrants.
