Lisa Genova’s latest novel, Left Neglected focuses on the main character, Sarah Nickerson, who is a career-driven supermom living outside of Boston with her husband and her three children.
Sarah manages every minute of her life like an air traffic controller. One day, however, when driving to work and trying to make a phone call on her cell, she takes her eye off the road and her life comes to a screeching halt.
Suffering from a traumatic brain injury, Sarah experiences “left neglect,” the strange feeling that one does not have the left side of their body. Through the course of the novel Sarah must struggle to regain her independence and to heal and through these experiences she begins to appreciate the gift of life, love and family.
Lisa Genova has a PhD in Neuroscience from Harvard University. She is an online columnist for the National Alzheimer’s Association.
