Swampscott Couple Shows the Spirit of Christmas Goes Beyond Religion

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas at a Swampscott home decorated with 11 Christmas trees.

With Santa Claus statues lining their stairs and nutcrackers around every corner, Joel and Mary Abramson certainly embody the Christmas spirit. The only twist: they’re Jewish.

“We do this to celebrate the holidays,” Joel said to WHDH News 7. “It’s not religious occasion, we don’t celebrate it as such. We celebrate it as a tradition we love and just part of the holiday spirit.”

The Swampscott couple opens their Christmas-themed home, which they begin decorating two weeks before Thanksgiving, to people around the area. People love stopping by to see the thousands of decorations the couple puts up around the house, Joel told WHDH.

“It’s pretty overwhelming. People tell me they need to come back two or three times to really get the gist of the whole thing,” Mary said to WHDH.

Among the Saint Nicks, Christmas carolers and holly are themed rooms like Mary’s “Blue Christmas” office lined with Elvis decorations and a corner filled with Fenway Park ornaments and figurines.

“The only people who don’t like it are Yankees fans and they’re not invited,” Joel said to WHDH.
