Swampscott Rolls Out Automated Trash, Recycling Cart Switch
Residents will get a 35-gallon trash cart and a 95-gallon recycling cart under the town's new collection system.
SWAMPSCOTT, MA — Swampscott is preparing to switch to automated trash and recycling collection and is starting to share details before the new system begins
Under the change, residents will use town-issued wheeled carts for curbside trash and recycling pickup. The carts will replace the mix of barrels, bins and other containers now used by households.
In addition to a town-provided 35-gallon trash cart, each eligible household will receive one 95-gallon recycling cart.

Automated collection has become a growing standard in the solid waste industry and uses trucks with a mechanical arm to lift and empty carts.
Town officials said the change is intended to improve worker safety by reducing manual lifting, make collection more consistent and efficient, and reduce loose trash and recycling left at the curb.

The town said the move is part of a broader effort to manage rising solid waste and recycling costs while supporting cleaner streets and a more reliable collection program.
Officials said costs tied to trash, recycling, yard waste, disposal and fuel have increased significantly in recent years. The town said moving to automated collection is one step it is taking to modernize the program and control long-term costs while continuing curbside service.
Town-issued carts will be delivered to eligible households before the program starts, and residents do not need to be home when the carts arrive. Carts are assigned to the property and should stay with the property if a home is sold or there is a change in tenancy.
More information on the delivery schedule will be shared closer to the transition date.
Residents will still be able to buy additional blue bags.
If used, a blue bag can be placed on top of the trash cart.
The town also says it is developing plans to allow an additional barrel for an annual fee, with more information expected soon.
