Transgender Swampscott Principal's Leave Extended

The superintendent opted to extend Shannon Daniels' leave.

SWAMPSCOTT, MA — A Swampscott elementary school principal who recently came out as transgender has had her leave of absence extended. The Lynn Item reports Superintendent Pamela Angelakis extended Stanley Elementary School Principal Shannon Daniels' leave of absence indefinitely.

School psychologist Liam Hurley will continue stepping in for Daniels. Angelakis said in an email to parents she will often be at the school during Daniels' absence.

The 52-year-old Daniels has been principal since 2012, and less than a month ago came out as transgender. The parents behind the petition declaring no confidence in Daniels say the complaint comes from issues stemming from before Daniels' announced plans to transition to a female. The petition alleges Daniels created a toxic environment for students and staff, The Boston Globe reported.
