Dog Dies In 3-Alarm Tewksbury Fire

The cause of the fire, which destroyed a Herbert Street home, remains under investigation.

TEWKSBURY, MA -- The only person home when a fire started in a Herbert Street house was able to escape and call 911 after hearing a noise and seeing smoke in the home's lower level Sunday night. But a family dog that became frightened and hid perished in the fire, which destroyed the house. Another resident was on his way home when the fire.

"The firefighters responding to the scene did a good job of making a quick attack. Unfortunately, there was some advanced fire showing upon their arrival," Tewksbury Fire Chief Michael Hazel told the Lowell Sun, which first reported this story.

The fire was reported at 11:15 pm Sunday. Fire fighters from Billerica, Wilmington, Andover, Lawrence and North Reading assisted in fighting the fire and providing coverage while the operation was underway.
