Local Student Receives $2,000 College Scholarship

Recently, Shihan Jeff Davis from TSDI Enrichment Programs, Inc., a 501 (c) 3 non-profit public charityawarded a $2,000 Martial Arts Cultural Enrichment College Scholarship to Kayla Hourihan, a student of 10 years from The Self-Defense Institute in Tewksbury.

Kayla Hourihan, an outstanding Black Belt student, was presented this martial arts college scholarship in front hundreds of spectators at the 11th annual Competition of Champions,which was held at the in Tewksbury.

According to Shihan Jeff, "Kayla was awarded this college scholarship as she has exceeded the expectations of leadership,impressive martial arts skills, and her commitment to personal excellence.  For ten years, Kayla was a successful regional and national martial arts competitor, a member of the National Black Belt Club, and an honorable member of the elite Team TSDI.  She has an outstanding academic record, as well as an outstanding resume of community service.  From walking 20-miles and raising money for the annual Walk for Hunger with The Self-Defense Institute to appearing with TEAM TSDI at the numerous fundraising events in Tewksbury, Kayla's positive attitude contributed greatly".

For the past few years, TSDI Enrichment Programs, Inc., has awarded a college scholarship of over $2,000 to a local high school student with excellent personal, academic and community achievements.Also, The Self-Defense Institute was recognized this year for exemplary teaching, leadership in the community and a commitment to excellence.

The Self-Defense Institute was chosen from hundreds of studios in the Northeast to receive the Bruce Lee Foundation Award presented to Shihan Jeff and Shihan Deb by Shannon Lee, Bruce Lee's daughter, at the Grand Nationals in Rhode Island.  Kayla Hourihan was one of the elite students from The Self-Defense Institute chosen to meet Shannon Lee and to compete at the Grand Nationals, where she did extremely well in her divisions.For more information about The Self-Defense Institute go to www.tsdiOnLine.com
