UPDATED: Route 38 Crash Kills 40-year-old

The District Attorney's office is still not releasing the name of a man killed in a head-on crash on Route 38 this morning.

The collision took place around 7:30 a.m. on a curve in the road near 1619 Main St., just past

"The identity of the deceased is not being released yet, pending notification of next of kin," said Jessica Pastore, a spokesperson in the office of Middlesex D.A. Gerry Leone. "The second driver was injured but it is not believed his injuries are life-threatening."

Tewksbury Deputy Police Chief John Voto confirmed that the deceased was  a male in his 40s.  The driver of the second vehicle was taken to the trauma unit at Leahy Clinic in Burlington. The other driver  was taken to Saints Medical Center in Lowell where he was pronounced dead.

An ambulance from Billerica provided mutual aid.

The crash involved a pickup truck driving south and a silver sports coupe driving north.

The State Police Accident Reconstruction Unit is leading the investigation into the cause of the accident.

"The cause of the accident is under investigation," said Pastore, adding that there was no obvious cause, "at this time."
