Tewksbury Carjacking Suspect Captured

TEWKSBURY, MA - Tewksbury police have captured the suspect in the carjacking at a Tewksbury gas station on Saturday night.

Tewksbury Police arrested William Tighe, 32, with help from Lowell and State Police. Tighe was captured near his girlfriend's house at Acropolis Road, police said. He was captured after a short foot chase.

He will be arraigned Wednesday morning in Lowell District Court.

Tighe was allegedly caught on tape entering a woman's vehicle at a Circle K gas station and driving off with it.

Police previously said they have obtained an arrest warrant, but they were asking for the public's help to locate Tighe, who was "saturated with gasoline'' when he was sprayed by a woman who was pumping gas.

Police say Tighe is formerly of Tewksbury and Somerville and has ties to Lowell.

Officers responded to the 1785 Andover St. gas station at 7:24 p.m. on Saturday where they were told that a woman was pumping gas when the suspect got into her car and attempted to drive away. The woman appeared to struggle to pull the man from her car and sprayed him with gas.

As the suspect drove off in her car, the woman was dragged alongside the vehicle for a short distance in the parking lot.

The vehicle, a red Mazda with New Jersey Plates, was recovered Saturday night in Lowell.

Police released surveillance footage of the suspect taken at the Circle K.
