The library's schedule of events for the week of Nov. 20 includes three bestselling authors and a puzzle race.

Monday, November 20, 7pm

Join Gary Goshgarian, award-winning Professor Emeritus of English at Northeastern University, for an illustrative lecture on the 10 basic elements that make a mystery or thriller successful. This presentation is perfect for avid readers of the genres as well as anyone interested in writing a mystery or thriller of their own. Goshgarian, who has taught fiction-writing workshops through the United States and Europe, will make references to well-known mysteries and thrillers during his presentation, as well as highlight examples from his own work. Under the pen name "Gary Braver," Goshgarian is the bestselling and award-winning author of 10 mysteries and medical thrillers. His novels have been translated into seventeen languages, and three have been optioned for movies, including Elixir by director Ridley Scott. After the event, signed copies of his latest thriller, Rumor of Evil, will be available for purchase to anyone interested.

VIRTUAL: History Of The Silk Road (*RR)

The Silk Road was and is a network of trade routes connecting the East and West, and was central to the economic, cultural, political, and religious interactions between these regions from the 2nd century BCE to the 18th century. Examine this miraculous, sometimes deadly, always adventure-filled land and sea routes that connected East Asia and Southeast Asia with South Asia, Persia, the Arabian Peninsula, East Africa, and Southern Europe. Led by Dr. Bill Thierfelder, a retired college professor who taught a variety of Arts and Humanities courses for 32 years at several New York universities and colleges. He holds a Ph.D. in English, with minors in theater, art history and music history.

VIRTUAL: A History Of TV Talk Shows (*RR)

From its start in the early 1950s, the talk show has been one of television’s most versatile and durable formats. Pioneering programs like Today, Person-to-Person, and Tonight established the basic features that have guided the format ever since, particularly the importance of the host in guiding the proceedings. Whether it was the sophisticated wit of Dick Cavett, the magnetic empathy of Oprah Winfrey, the innovative comedy of David Letterman, or the sharp political satire of Jon Stewart, the talk show has continued to provide viewers with a lively mix of entertainment, information, and compelling conversation. Take a look back at the fascinating history of the television talk show, and examine its changing appeal from decade to decade. Led by Brian Rose, a professor emeritus at Fordham University, where he taught for 38 years in the Department of Communication and Media Studies. Rose has written several books on television history and cultural programming, and conducted more than a hundred Q&A’s with leading directors, actors, and writers.

Tiny Tykes Story Time

Tiny Tykes Storytime is designed for young children ages 0 to 18 months. Older siblings are always welcome to join in. Join us for a fun session of stories, songs, fingerplays, instruments, and gentle movement that help build early literacy skills. Babies experience the sounds and structure of language through rhythm, rhyme and repetition.

Sprouts Story Time

Tuesday, November 21, 11am

Join Miss Kat for stories, songs, movement, instruments, dancing and more, and get your early literacy skills on! Sprouts Storytime is designed for is designed for little ones 18 months through 4 years, but siblings are always welcome.

Teen Events

Board Game Meet and Greet (*RR)

Monday, November 20, 1pm

Want to meet other teens? Love playing board games? Join us for a meet and greet geared towards homeschooled teens! We'll set up a bunch of board games, grab some new friends and play. Due to the ability to host multiple people at this event, we will not all be playing the same game. There will be multiple games happening at different tables so everyone can find a game that they enjoy! This event is for teens in grades 6-12 only. Please let us know if you'll be late to the event. If you arrive more than 5 minutes after the event and have not let us know, your spot will be forfeit to someone on the waitlist. Thank you.
