Frequently Asked Questions about the U.S. Census:

Q: What is the United States Census?

A: The census is a count of everyone living in the United States. This mandatory count is required by the U.S. Constitution.

Q: Who gets counted?

A: Everyone. All people residing in the United States must be counted. This includes people of all ages, background -- citizens and non-citizens. Federal law protects the personal information you provide during the census.

Q: When will the census happen?

A: Beginning in March 2020. The United States Census is conducted every 10 years. Census invitations will be mailed or delivered to every household in the nation starting in mid-March. The survey will ask you to provide information that is accurate for your household or where you reside most of the year, as of April 1, 2020.

Q: I’ve already responded to the Annual Town Census. Is it necessary to also respond to the United States Census?

A: Yes. The 2020 United States Census is separate from the annual street listing, which is often called the local census. The annual street listing document is used to confirm your residency and keep your voter registration status up to date. It is important to return both your annual street listing and the United States Census in 2020.

If you have any questions concerning the annual street listing, you may contact Tewksbury Town Clerk’s Office at 978-640-4344 or e-mail dgraffeo@tewksbury-ma.gov. If you have questions about the 2020 United States Census, you may call The Secretary of the Commonwealth’s Census Division at 1-833-MA1-2020.
