VIRTUAL: The Nuremberg War Crimes Trials -- Prosecuting Evil (*RR)

Wednesday, April 17, 7pm

Prominent Nazi leaders were prosecuted in military tribunals, marking a turning point between classical and contemporary international law. These trials served three important purposes: first, they thoroughly documented Nazi atrocities; second, the trials exposed many of the defendants for the war criminals they were and denied the Nazi leaders any possibility of martyrdom; and finally, the trials are of ground-breaking legal significance. Also, of note, the first Nuremberg trial features perhaps the worst cross-examination ever conducted in history, undertaken by the United States prosecutor – a cross-examination so bad that law schools now teach it as a lesson on how not to cross-examine a witness. Led by the Honorable Dennis J. Curran, retired Massachusetts Superior Court Justice. He has taught law at Tufts University, Roger Williams University of School of Law, and Brown University.

VIRTUAL: Creative Couples -- Emily Sargent & Jo Hopper (*RR)

Thursday, April 18, 10:30am

Emily traveled with her brother throughout Europe and, particularly after 1900, created hundreds of landscapes of her experiences. Josephine Nivison, an artist and teacher in New York City, married Edward Hopper when they were both in their 40s. Jo Hopper then devoted her energies to Edward’s success for almost 50 years. Explore how each of their artistic lives reflected the historic events of their time. Led by Martha Chiarchiaro, owner of Seeing History, who has brought history to life through the art of the times for more than 30 years. She received her Masters’ degree in the History of Art from Williams College and provides a variety of art history presentations at the Worcester Art Museum, the Worcester Institute for Senior Education (WISE), libraries, senior centers, and garden clubs.
