Tewksbury Town Manager Proposes 2.5 Percent Budget Increase

The proposal does not include several increases that had been requested by various town departments, including new school positions.

TEWKSBURY, MA -- Increased costs at Shawsheen Valley Technical High School, higher retirement costs and bigger salaries prompted Tewksbury Town Manager Richard Montuori to propose a 2.5 percent increase for the town's budget. Montuori outlined his proposed budget of $113.71 million to selectmen, up from $110.95 million in the current year.

Montuori said a new high school in Billerica meant fewer students from that town were heading to Shawsheen Tech, increasing Tewksbury's costs 8 percent to $6.7 million. Those increases, coupled with higher salaries and retirement costs, meant Montuori had to decline several costs from town departments, including two new EMT/firefighter positions and new positions in the school department.
