Tewksbury Town Meeting: Special Warrant Passed, Zoning Withdrawn

The zoning bylaw committee moved to withdraw the town rezoning articles due to the coronavirus.

TEWKSBURY, MA — The full warrant for Tewksbury's special town meeting was passed, Wednesday, while the two remaining articles from the annual town meeting were withdrawn.

Only one article on the special town meeting warrant sparked any debate: Article 2 allocated $220,000 for temporary sports infrastructure at the high school. One resident moved to postpone the article indefinitely, citing budget concerns related to the coronavirus, but the town manager said it was necessary for high school sports to take place.

The article was amended, to include the purchase, lease or construction of a "multimedia platform," rather than building a "permanent press box." The indefinite postponement failed, and the article was adopted.

The final two articles of the annual town meeting warrant, which would have recodified the town's zoning bylaws following years of work by the Zoning Bylaw Committee, was withdrawn, "without prejudice," at the request of that committee. The committee voted Tuesday to recommend withdrawal, due to the coronavirus. They plan to bring the plan forward again in 2021.
