WAKEFIELD, MA — The Wakefield Police Department is warning residents about a scam that is making the rounds.
Police said the scam is in the form of a text from an unknown number with a photo attached showing a notice from the state traffic division.
The scheme demands immediate payment for various traffic violations.
"Courts do not send texts regarding court dates for criminal or motor vehicle fines or violations," police wrote. "Any payments made to a court must be made in person at court. Many common scams are from perpetrators posing as law enforcement, IRS, banks, creditors and sound very convincing."
