Wakefield Police Issue Warning On Scam

The scheme demands immediate payment for various traffic violations.

WAKEFIELD, MA — The Wakefield Police Department is warning residents about a scam that is making the rounds.

Police said the scam is in the form of a text from an unknown number with a photo attached showing a notice from the state traffic division.

"Courts do not send texts regarding court dates for criminal or motor vehicle fines or violations," police wrote. "Any payments made to a court must be made in person at court. Many common scams are from perpetrators posing as law enforcement, IRS, banks, creditors and sound very convincing."
