Annual Blessing of Animals at Emmanuel Episcopal Church
Emmanuel Episcopal Church to Hold Annual Blessing of Animals, Sunday, October 7, 2018 at 12 noon. All are Welcome!

Wakefield, MA--Emmanuel Episcopal Church will be honoring St. Francis of Assisi this Sunday, October 7 with its annual Blessing of Animals service, to be held on the church’s front lawn at 12:00 Noon. The blessing will be conducted by Emmanuel Church’s rector, the Rev. Dr. Matthew P. Cadwell
St. Francis, who lived in Italy from 1181 to 1226, is revered for his love of nature. Born into wealth and privilege, Francis rejected his inheritance preferring a life of simplicity and poverty. He founded the Franciscan religious order, which embraces the same values. Canonized as a saint in 1228, Francis is honored across Christian denominations and religious traditions.
“St. Francis is an inspirational figure for people of diverse faiths and backgrounds. He is venerated especially for his profound commitment to sharing in the values of Christ. Reflecting on creation as the mirror of God, he called all creatures his brothers and sisters, and even preached to birds in the trees. On Sunday we will give thanks for wonders of creation, and especially the beloved pets who offer tremendous happiness and companionship. We will ask God’s continuing blessing and health for them,” said Dr. Cadwell. Animals of all sorts are welcome. Photographs of pets that do not travel well are invited. Children also may bring stuffed animals to be blessed.
