Automated Trash Collection Begins Next Month In Wakefield

Republic Hauling, the Town's waste management contractor, will begin automated residential trash collection March 1.

Press release via Town of Wakefield

WAKEFIELD, MA — Beginning March 1, Republic Hauling, the Town’s waste management contractor, will begin automated residential trash collection in Wakefield. Republic will be using vehicles with mechanical arms to pick up and empty our existing blue trash bins. This will impact trash only; recycling collection will not change. Republic is making this process adjustment to enhance the efficiency of collection and increase safety for its hauling crews.

Bins should continue to be curbside by 7 a.m. on your collection days. The order of streets in a day’s route may be adjusted and collection will take place faster, so your actual pickup time may be different from what you experienced in the past. Having your bin out at 7 a.m. will ensure you don’t miss the collection.

Over the next few weeks, residents should get used to a few guidelines to ensure the automated truck can collect your bins easily:

  • The front of the bin, where you’ll find the ID number and lid opening, should face the street; wheels and handle at the back.
  • Place the bin at least 3 feet from any object – like a car, tree, pole, fire hydrant, or mailbox – so the automated arm can reach your bin.
  • Please maintain this same distance of 3 feet between your bin and any nearby recycling or compost bins. If you have purchased orange overflow trash bags, place them in a pile on the ground at least three feet from the bin.
  • Don’t place your bin under a tree.
  • Place bins one foot from the curb or edge of the street.
  • Remember to close the lid of the bin.
  • For safety, please don’t allow children to play in or around the bins as collection trucks use mechanical arms to pick up the bins.
  • During winter months, avoid placing bins on top of or behind snowbanks.

Over the next few weeks, you may see Republic crews using the new trucks as they train on our routes. Their goal is to be fully automated by March 1. If you have any questions or concerns, call the Public Works Department at (781) 246-6301, ext. 4120.
