A Celebration of Italian Heritage Month

October meeting of the Wakefield Sons & Daughters of Italy Lodge 1734

Authentic Italian pizza was the theme of the October meeting of the Wakefield Sons & Daughters of Italy Lodge 1734 this year. Although Wakefield and surrounding towns offer delicious pizza, the Lodge enjoyed pizza direct from Naples, Italy! Talia Di Napoli now offers a bake, freeze and ship option. Their slogan is “Life is too short to eat bad pizza”. Words to live by!

In addition to eating pizza, members watched a documentary about a successful pizza business. “Pizza Shop: An Italian American Dream” is an hour-long film about the history of Rudy’s Ristorante in Closter, NJ. Two brothers, Charlie and Fred, emigrated from Calabria Italy in 1963. Although they run a thriving business, it did not come easy. The film touches on years of hard work, challenges faced, and bringing their son’s (and their different ideas) into the business.

In November, the community is invited to attend a Gala 50th Anniversary for the Lodge. It will be held on November 16, at St. Joseph’s Church Hall, 173 Albion Street Wakefield. A reception will begin at 6:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 7:30. Laurie’s 909 will be catering, and DJ Brendan Donahue will provide music for dancing. Tickets for this event are $30 per person, and can be purchased by contacting Paula Sasso at 781-799-6203 or pscrusader78@gmail.com.
