Dates Set for Galvin School Building Discussions

Three meetings will be held later this month to discuss plans for the Galvin Middle School Building project.

The Galvin School Building Committee has set dates for several upcoming meetings, where school department staff, as well as the public, will have a chance to discuss ideas for the Galvin Middle School building project.

“We’ve had a couple of meetings,” said chairman Lisa Butler. “We talked about upcoming dates for the educational vision meetings where the school department will meet and discuss what their vision and what their needs are for the education portion of the middle school.”

So far three meetings have been set. There will be meetings on Aug. 22 and 23 for the senior management team of the Galvin, which will be for the school related personnel. Then, there will be another meeting on Aug. 29, which will mark the beginning of the input from the community.

“We’ll have members of the community, PTO members maybe reach out to other board members,” said Butler. “This stage is more of the input stage for the feasibility study.”

With that information in hand, the school department can then consider their options and study some schematic designs that will be drafted in the future.

The Aug. 22 meeting will function as a visioning session, where the school’s strategic plan will be reviewed and ideas will be discussed. Then, at the Aug. 23 meeting, staff from all over the department, including theater arts staff, special education, food service and athletics will discuss what is needed in the new building. Some of the questions that might be asked include: Is a media center required? What will the core academic classrooms need? Is the team teaching model effective?

Then, the public forum on Aug. 29 will allow anyone in the community to offer their suggestions.

“I encourage anyone from the community during the Aug. 29 visioning session,” said Superintendent Joan Landers. “Anyone from the community is welcome to come to that meeting, which starts at 8:30 to 12:30 on that day.”

Landers also invited the public to attend the permanent building committee meetings, which will also begin on Aug. 29.

“Anyone from the community is also welcome at any of our permanent building committee meetings,” Landers said. “The meeting’s public forums will be held at 7:30. The first meeting is Aug. 29 in the Center for Performing Arts, and the other is Sept. 19.”
