Don't Let the Snow Fool You, Spring Sports Kick Off on Monday

The Wakefield High spring sports season gets underway on Monday. Here's a rundown of this week's action.

Don’t let Friday’s snow/rain/ice storm fool you, the Wakefield High spring sports season has finally arrived. 

After a slew of scrimmages, postponements and postponed scrimmages, the regular season kicks into full gear on Monday as the boys track team hosts Belmont for a 3:30 p.m. meet and the girls team hits the road and will travel to Belmont for a meet. 

The Wakefield boys and girls tennis teams combined to win just a handful of games last season, but will look to turn things around this year as both teams head to Reading for a 3:30 p.m. match on Monday.

Getting past the Rockets won’t be easy though. The Reading boys team finished 12-6 last year and made it to the Div. 2 North quarterfinals, while the girls team finished 13-5and also saw quarterfinal action. 

If lacrosse is your game, then you can catch the boys lacrosse team start its season on Tuesday at 3:45 p.m. when it hosts a tough Lexington squad that finished 13-7 last season. The Warriors went 9-9 last year and bowed out of the MIAA Div. 2 east preliminary round with a 12-7 loss to Winchester.

On Thursday Wakefield will host Malden at 4 p.m. 

The Lady Warriors lacrosse team had a rough season in 2010, but will try to start 2011 off on the right foot when it heads to Lexington to face an equally tough girls team that went 14-5-1 last year, followed a home game against Belmont at 4 p.m. on Thursday. 

The Wakefield softball team had a big 2010, finishing 14-6 last year only to lose 1-0 to Reading in first round of the Div. 2 North sectional. The Warriors will host Arlington on Tuesday for their final scrimmage before heading to Bishop Fenwick on Saturday for an 11 a.m. game. 

Lastly, the 7-13 Warriors baseball team hosts scrimmages against Revere (Monday) and Lynnfield (Wednesday) before hosting Wilmington on Friday at 3:45 p.m. for Wakefield’s home opener.
