Wakefield, MA - The home of a Linden Avenue family suffered significant smoke damage from a fire on Monday night that was contained to a basement bedroom.
No one was injured in the fire, and Wakefield Fire Chief Michael Sullivan said the family can thank their working smoke detectors for making sure everyone got out of the house safely.
Shortly after 8 p.m. on Monday, Sullivan said the police department started getting a number of 911 calls about a house fire at 9 Linden Avenue.

When the fire crews got to the scene, the family of eight was safely outside the house. Firefighters battled heavy smoke and found the fire in a basement bedroom.
Sullivan said the mother had the foresight to shut the basement bedroom door, and the fire was contained to that one room.

Firefighters were on the scene until about 10:30 p.m.
Although the fire was contained to the one room, there was heavy smoke damage throughout the house. The Red Cross arrived and helped find lodgings for the displaced family of eight.
Sullivan said the cause of the fire was electrical, either from a powerstrip or an extension cord plugged into the powerstrip.
