Five Players Named Middlesex Hockey All-Stars

Seniors John Sartell, Pat McCarthy and Adam Giancola along with juniors Joe Cerulo and Kevin Doherty were all named Middlesex League All-Stars.

The Wakefield High boys hockey team had a historic year this season. After winning the Div. 1 North championship, the Warriors faced off against Marshfield in the state championship at the TD Garden, but lost a heartbreaker, 3-2.

To cap off Wakefield’s phenomenal season, five players were recently named Middlesex League All-Stars.

Junior goaltender Joe Cerulo had a monster year with a 1.98 goals against average and kept Wakefield in just about every game.

“Joe just came right in and took the start from the very beginning,” said head coach Derek Edgerly. “He’s a big kid. He’s 6-foot-1, about 200 pounds. When you get a goalie that big... it’s very tough for a high school kid to score on. He comes out and challenges you. He does a hell of a job and I’m just glad we had him on our team. Thank god he’s not a senior. I think if he puts 100 percent in the summertime, working out and listening to his goalie coaches I think he’s going to be a hell of a goaltender.”

Senior captain John Sartell led the defense and racked up 12 goals and 14 assists on the season for 26 points overall.

“Any award out there he made it this year,” said Edgerly. “I’m going to miss him a lot. Johnny, from his freshman year, everybody knew about him and everybody was scared of him, even as a freshman. I think Johnny is going to have a great career in hockey.”

Senior defenseman Pat McCarthy finished with four goals and 10 assists this year, and will tryout for the hockey team at Trinity College in 2011-2012.

“Pat was probably the steadiest of all the defensemen this year,” said Edgerly. Pat’s not the flashiest guy, but when it comes to crunch-time, you need him out there. He’s a kid that never gets off the ice. Since day one he’s never missed a practice or game. He just loves coming to the rink. He was one of the best defensemen in the league.”

Senior captain and forward Adam Giancola had an incredible season for Wakefield, leading the Warriors with 18 goals and 24 assists for 42 points.

“He was one of the guys I needed all the time out there,” said Edgerly. “He put the play right to his speed... he made everybody around him a great hockey player. I thought he was one of the best forwards last year too for us, and this year he proved he’s one of the best forwards not just for us but in the league.”

With a year still to play, junior forward Kevin Doherty had a big year with 18 goals and 14 assists for 32 points and will sure to be a force next season.

“I think if gets into the gym a little bit this year and gets a little stronger I think he can put  up 50 points next year,” said Edgerly.
