MA Patch Candidate Profile: Peter Meaney For State Representative

WAKEFIELD, MA — Massachusetts voters will head to the polls Nov. 3 to decide races for state House and Senate seats, along with several statewide contests.

Massachusetts Patch asked candidates to answer questions about their campaigns and will be publishing candidate profiles as election day draws near.

Peter Meaney is running for state representative in the 9th Essex District, a seat currently held by his opponent, Donald Wong.

• Age: 41
• Position sought: Massachusetts State Representative for the 9th Essex District.
• Party affiliation: Democratic Party.
• Family: Married, father of three children. Was raised in a working-class family; father was a Lynn firefighter and mother was a factory worker at GE.
• Education: Earned a Bachelor's degree and a Doctorate of Dental Medicine (DMD) from Boston University.
• Occupation: Practicing Dentist and Small Business Owner at Broadway Family Dental. He is also a retired, disabled U.S. Navy Veteran who served during the height of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
• Previous or Current Elected Office: Serves as a Lynn City Councilor (Ward 1), a position he has held since being elected in 2022.

• Why are you seeking elected office? Running to bring a working-class perspective to Beacon Hill. Aims to be an accessible, responsive, and accountable leader who focuses on real results for families rather than playing the role of a career politician.
• The single most-pressing issue facing our district is: the high cost of living / lack of affordability, and this is what I intend to do about it: Plans to tackle this through three specific core initiatives: enacting universal pre-kindergarten to eliminate massive daycare costs for working parents, banning predatory AI algorithms that corporate landlords use to artificially jack up rent and housing costs, and putting a moratorium on data centers so local ratepayers aren't subsidizing multi-billion dollar tech corporations.
• What are the critical differences between you and other candidates seeking this post? Active, everyday responsiveness. As a sitting city councilor, is continuously working on the ground doing community cleanups and answering calls. Unlike the eight-term Republican incumbent, Donald Wong, who is more unresponsive.
• Describe the other issues that define your campaign platform. The platform leans heavily on education, clean energy, and labor support. Has been strongly endorsed by the Environmental League of MA for focus on grid modernization and sustainable energy, as well as the American Federation of Teachers MA for proven track record of securing school funding, such as the building of the new Pickering School.
• The best advice ever shared with me was: Let hard work show up in action, not just words.
• What else would you like voters to know about yourself and your positions? Wants voters to know that he understands what it means to pick yourself up from nothing. Having juggled multiple jobs to pay his way through school after his military service, he views public office as a direct continuation of his lifelong commitment to service—first in uniform, then in healthcare, and now in government
