Broken Leg Productions is pleased to announce programming for Summer 2018! Broken Leg launched in the summer of 2017 with a mission of producing high quality theatrical productions through arts education. Last year’s launch involved a successful program for high school and college aged students, and for summer 2018 we are very pleased to continue our programming for this age level while also expanding to include programs for middle school aged students. Recognizing that most summer programing options conclude at graduation, an early goal of BLP was to expand beyond the high school ages and provide opportunities for recent graduates and college students to continue their summer theatrical education through an intensive program, culminating in performance. The summer of 2017 saw an impressive start to this program, with 19 student cast members from 6 different communities joining together to mount our premiere musical production of “Aida” over the course of 4 weeks. Following the success of this initial year, this program model will continue in 2018 with two 4-week sessions for students ages 14-21. Session 1 will run from June 25th -July 21st , culminating in performances of the classic Kander and Ebb musical “Chicago.” Session 2 will follow from July 23rd -August 18th , presenting the timely musical “Spring Awakening.” Both productions are sure to challenge student actors through music, movement, and intense acting work as they explore the challenging themes presented within both of these mature pieces. In addition to continuing this program for our older students, Broken Leg is very excited to be expanding and incorporating middle school programming in Summer 2018! Middle school programs are open to students entering grades 5
through 9. With two different Disney classics planned, it is sure to be a memorable and magical summer for our younger actors as they develop their performance skills. Session 1 of our middle school program will be a full 5-week session, running from June 25th -July 29th , and culminating in a full production of the Disney musical “The Little Mermaid.” For students who may not be able to commit to a full 5 weeks, or for those who want just a little more theatrical fun in their summer, session 2 will be a shorter 2-week session running from July 30 th -August 12 th . Our session 2 actors will be presenting the newly adapted version of Disney’s “Aladdin Jr.”
Broken Leg Productions is the realized dream of artistic director Adam Schuler, who will be at the helm of each of these productions. Schuler is a theatre educator with extensive experience, having served as a director of the Melrose Middle and High School drama programs for 6 years as well as directing adult and youth programming with many groups throughout the region over the past decade. For the summer of 2018 he has gathered a staff with over 30 combined years of work in theatre education, including professionals with backgrounds in
theatre, dance, music, education, and communications.
