The Wakefield High baseball team beat Melrose, 4-3, in eight innings on Monday.
The last meeting between the Wakefield and Melrose High baseball teams took 10 innings to decide. Unfortunately for the Warriors, they came out on the losing end of a 8-4 decision.
Monday’s rematch at Pine Banks Park also took extra innings to decide, but this time Wakefield came out on the winning end of a 4-3 ballgame.
“The kids played great today,” said Wakefield head coach Dennis Bisso. “We’ve been playing good the last three games. Brendan DeLeire pitched terrific and defensively we played unbelievably in the field.”

DeLeire pitched seven strong innings for the Warriors (6-11) and scored the game-winner in the top of the eighth to give himself and his team the win.
The junior right-hander led off the inning with a walk, was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Adam Gianola, and then scored on a swinging bunt by Nick Calderon that sailed wide at first base.

Senior pitcher Connor O’Brien came in in the bottom of the inning and allowed a one-out double, but recorded the final two outs to pick up the save.
With Wakefield out of the playoffs, Bisso said he was proud of the way his team played on Monday.
“It’s a credit to the kids,” said Bisso. “They’re working hard and we’re playing the best ball we’ve played all year, it’s just a shame that we didn’t have an opportunity to get into the playoffs because I would have liked to see this team get in the tournament.”
Wakefield will end its regular season today with a home game against Burlington today at 3:45 p.m.
