PHOTOS: World War II Memorial Dedication on Veterans Day
Wakefield unveiled a new monument dedicated to World War II Veterans and dedicated the former "upper common" to become the Veterans Memorial Park.
After two years of fundraising and effort, the World War II Committee unveiled the new monument dedicated to the soldiers who died fighting in World War II.
Wakefield gathered together in the center of town on November 11, at 11 a.m., to honor all the fallen service men and women of World War II, including the 72 individuals from Wakefield who died fighting for the country and the 2,471 veterans who served alongside them.
The new granite monument displays several bronze plaques listing all the names of soldiers from Wakefield who served in World War II, and a "Walk of Remembrance" to honor all those who served and who are currently serving in the military.

"Today, we honor all those who have ever worn a uniform," said Phyllis Hull, chairwoman of the World War II Memorial Committee. "I want to convey the deep gratitude of the community to the Wakefield community for their support, the many people and who donated their time and energy to this project, and the businesses and organizations who supported our fundraising drives. Your support has brought this to fruition."
