SCAM ALERT: Police Warning Residents to Watch Out

Police are urging Wakefield residents to watch out for a telephone scam.

WAKEFIELD, MA - Wakefield police are warning Wakefield residents about a telephone scam.

The scammer is calling people’s phones and claiming to be from a company the target previously made a transaction with that is going out of business. The scammer then tells their victim they want to give them a refund for $600, for example.

The culprit asks for their victim’s bank account information for an electronic transfer.

The victim will then see a sum much higher than what was originally agreed upon, for example $15,000. They receive a call from the scammer saying $15,000 was the minimum deposit and the extra money must be wired back.

After the transaction the victim notices the entire sum of $15,000 has been transferred out of their account.
