Season Recap: Warriors Miss Playoffs by One Game

Last season, the Wakefield High boys basketball team made it into the MIAA tournament by one win. This season however, the Warriors found themselves on the otherside of the playoff bubble, and finished 9-11 to miss out on a trip to the Div. 2 North sectional by just one win.

The 2010-2011 season opened on a high note for Wakefield. The Warriors  behind 19 points from senior captain  Daniel Looney. After a , Wakefield made it three in a row with a. Junior Keyon Armstrong led the Warriors in scoring with 17 in that game.

But Wakefield ran into a speed bump in Woburn, as the Tanners . Things took a turn for the worse after the game, and Wakefield went on a terrible six-game losing streak that included big losses to ,  and . 

Wakefield exacted some revenge in its next game,  behind the strong play of seniors Dan Looney and Brian Mata, who scored 17 points and 15 points respectively.

At 4-6 overall, the Warriors would need to start stringing togther some wins if they wanted to make it to the postseason, but . 

Looney had another big game for Wakefield in the Warriors' but lost a  to fall to 6-9 with just five games remaining.

After a 53-50 win on the road against Watertown, the Warriors began to generate some momentum with important wins over  and . Wakefield would see its fourth overtime game of the season against Reading,  leaving its last game of the season — a road game against Melrose— a must-win.

Unfortuantely, that's where the story would end for the Warriors, as the Red Raiders handed them a brutal 75-39 loss to close out the season at 9-11.
