The Sons And Daughters Of Italy Sponsor Scholarships

High school seniors are invited to apply for a scholarship from the Wakefield Lodge

Attention high school seniors, both of Italian descent and not, you are invited to apply for a 2024 scholarship. We have been working very hard (and having fun) raising money, and the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts has a few generous sponsors who offer memorial scholarships, also. Details about qualifications and how to apply are found here. The deadline is February 14.

We are proud of our previous recipients and the wonderful things they have done. For example, Elizabeth Finn, WMHS Class of 2018 is a Legislative Aide for Rep. Steve Ultrino from Malden. She will be attending law school in the fall. Mackenzie Foley graduated with a four-year degree in athletic training, which has led to an interest in health. Now she is continuing her education in radiology. Courtney Hart is a physician’s assistant working at Brigham & Women’s Hospital. Kevin and Cameron Hart graduated the University of Rhode Island and working locally.

In case you were wondering what the lodge has been up to, read on. In December, we had our annual Christmas dinner of Chinese food. This year, Jade Gourmet cooked and set up a wonderful meal for us at the West Side Social Club. We had a fun raffle where members won scratch tickets, winter hats and scarfs, a Fitbit and sweatshirts. We had some special guests from other lodges join us. Former Lodge Treasurer, Tracy Vincent, was honored with a gift and thanks for her many years of service. We heard about the legend and Italian Traditions of La Befana. And we enjoyed a delicious selection of Italian cookies. It was a festive and fun meeting.

In January, a hearty group of members met in Stoneham to enjoy the Zoolights at the Stone Zoo. No one had attended recently and thoroughly enjoyed the displays, music and photo opportunities. Next up is a comedy night with our neighbors at the Wilmington Lodge.

Our next formal meeting will be the second Tuesday in March. New members are always welcome. If you want information about us, contact President Paula at wakefieldosia@gmail.com. Buon anno nuovo!
