Sports Roundup: Boys Lax Loses Heartbreaker

The Wakefield High boys lacrosse team lost to Belmont on Tuesday, 9-8.

The Wakefield High boys lacrosse suffered a heartbreaking loss to Belmont on Tuesday, as the Warriors battled back to within one point before losing, 9-8, to their Middlesex League rivals. 

“Today was a tough loss,” said head coach Eric Gobiel. “They came out to an early lead and we were playing catch up the rest of the game.”

“The fourth quarter was our strongest and the boys went out and fought hard but we just couldn't come all the way back,” added Gobiel.

Ryan Doherty and Mike Dellanno led Wakefield with a pair of goals each while Alec Brown, Ryan Dalton and Kevin Doherty all scored and John Sartell picked up an assist. 

Goalie Sam Bridges made 12 saves.

“We had some great individual performances today from Mike Conroy, John Sartell, and Ryan Dalton,” said Gobiel. “Those three were key factors in keeping today’s game close they all played exceptionally well and had their best games of the season thus far.”

Up next for Wakefield is a road game at Lynnfield on Friday at 4 p.m. at the Lynnfield Middle School. 

Girls Track

Reading 86, Wakefield  50

Kayla Milburn won the triple jump for Wakefield with a 31-3 and took third in the 100 hurdles with a 18.9. Rachel Wong took first in the 200 with a 27.1 and Jessica Duffy won the discus with a 87-2.5. 

Elizabeth Bray won the shot put with a throw of 34. 

Boys Track 

Winchester 75, Wakefield 61

Patrick Feeley had a big day for the Warriors despite the loss, winning the shot put with a 40-9 and taking second in the javelin with a 126-9. James Bridges won the mile in 4:47.3 while teammate Marc Bucchieri took second with a 4:54.3. 

Zachary Zolud won the 200 in 25.3 with Brett Tassinari coming in second with a 23.89.
