Student Presented with Award of Excellence

Wakfield High School student Yue Ren was recognized by Superintendent Joan Landers for his academic achievements.

Yue Ren was invited to attend a recent School Committee meeting where Superintendent Joan Landers presented him with an award of excellence and lauded him for his academic success.

Ren’s resume is nearly as thick as a book and he hasn’t even graduated from high school.

Among other accolades, he has won the Brown Junior Book Award, WHS Science Department Award, WHS Excellence in Physics Award, and finished in the top 25 at the Ashdown Chemistry Award.

He has been the top member of his class through his first three years of high school, and hopes to retain that honor this year despite a challenging plateful of coursework that includes AP English and AP Biology.

Outside of academics, Ren has also been an active community member: he plays the violin, has volunteered at the Cambridge Chinese Center, interned at the Museum of Science, and participated on several sports teams.

The superintendent and school committee members were impressed by Ren’s resume and made several playful cracks over its contents.

“I’m out of breath speaking about all of your accomplishments,” Landers said.

“You have a better resume I think than I do,” School Committee Member Kevin Piskaldo said.

Of course, there was also sincere praise for Ren’s accomplishments.

“Your parents should be very proud, as we are very proud of your accomplishments,” Landers said. “You’re a very fine, outstanding eloquent young man. I was honored to get to meet with you and to share your experiences. “

Ren was also given an opportunity to speak and expressed his appreciation for the award and his love for the Wakefield community.

“First of all I’d like to say thank you to Superintendent Joan Landers,” Ren said. “I’m very honored to receive this award.”

Ren will graduate following the current school year and is considering applying to MIT, Pennsylvania State University, Columbia University, and more.
