WAKEFIELD, MA — Proper disposal of leaves helps to prevent water pollution and flooding. Yard waste can clog storm drains, and rotting leaves can add excess nutrients local waterways, causing algae blooms, fish kills, and more.

Leaves and other yard waste should never be swept into the street or storm drains. Here in Wakefield, there are many ways to properly dispose of leaf litter, grass, shrubs and brush:

Curbside Pickup: November 9 and November 23

Yard waste must be curbside prior to 7 a.m. in biodegradable paper bags or barrels. Plastic bags cannot be collected. Please cut branches into 3’ lengths or less and tie in bundles no more than 18” in diameter.

Nahant Street Yard Waste Site

The Nahant Street yard waste is available for the disposal of leaves, grass, clippings, shrubs, and brush on scheduled dates throughout the season. Permits can be obtained at the DPW office at Town Hall or purchased online.

Compost

Leaves can be composted into a nutrient-rich fertilizer for your plants. You can also compost food scraps, coffee grounds, and more. Learn about backyard composting from the EPA.

Mulch

A mulching mower can turn your leaves into mulch to use in your flower beds and landscaping.
