It is with great sadness we inform the Wakefield community that Town Councilor Peter J. May passed away on Monday after a very courageous battle with ALS, a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord.

Councilor May was first elected to the Council in 2016 and served as Chair in 2018. Despite recent physical challenges, Peter remained an active participant in Council meetings using technology to voice his viewpoints and votes. Peter was sincere in his philosophy to always consider the best interests of those he served. He was an excellent communicator, listener, and mediator. His perseverance and commitment to his position as Town Councilor was an inspiration to his colleagues and constituents alike.
Outside of Council meetings, Peter was often seen providing entertainment at Town events. As PJ the DJ, his disc jockey talents made people smile, dance, and laugh. We were blessed to have had the opportunity to join him last month at the Angel Fund Walk where Team Peter raised over $16,000 for ALS research.

The list of Peter’s achievements is long, but one that he would likely put at the top is the creation of Wakefield’s community dog park in 2016. The park is used every day, in sunshine, in rain, and in snow. It is a gathering place for the community, both canine and human, and its vibrancy is an amazing legacy that will live on despite Peter’s passing.
We extend our deepest sympathy to his wife Eileen, son Connor, and all of Peter’s family and friends. He will be sorely missed.
