The Wakefield Food Pantry Thanks the Wakefield Community

The Wakefield Food Pantry (WFP) serves over 125 families struggling with food insecurity weekly. Unfortunately, we all face soaring grocery prices. From March 2020 to March 2024, the cost of groceries increased by roughly 25%, significantly outpacing the overall inflation rate. Our guests are especially hard hit and cannot afford these rising costs as they struggle with difficult circumstances beyond their control.

Thankfully, we have incredible backing from our Wakefield families, individuals, businesses, religious organizations and community groups to help our neighbors in need. Many WFP initiatives which were either introduced or expanded in 2024 include a climate-controlled food storage annex. The new trailer, a spacious 40' x 8' unit located behind the Americal Civic Center, doubles the WFP’s current storage capacity which allows our team to better stock food for guests who shop inside the pantry as well as for our external programs.

Some of these outward-bound programs encompass an expanded Kids First initiative that provides families of school-age children with healthy, kid-friendly food during the summer. We also reach out and deliver food to our Seniors and Veterans as well as stock mini-food pantries in the public schools. And, we can’t forget the use of our Little Free Pantries across Wakefield offering non-perishable food for those who can’t or prefer not to visit the WFP during its open hours.

At the Pantry, we witness the impact of our work every day. We notice each family or individual who walks through our door and leaves with bags full of groceries and a sense of relief. Our volunteers take the time to get to know our guests, understanding their dietary and cultural needs to provide the best possible support.
